American Risoles or usually we call it Smoked Beef Risoles is one of my favorite foods from Indonesia. In Indonesia, Risoles are written with one “s” instead of two “s” (“Risoles” not “Rissoles”). Risoles itself is a pastry (like a small croquette) that is wrapped with eggs and breadcrumbs. The ingredients for Risoles are usually rice noodles with veggies (potatoes, eggs, carrot, onion, and cilantro). However, me and my siblings when we were children, we did not like eating veggies. Whenever my mom made risoles, I usually broke the risoles and put all the veggies aside (I only ate the wrapper), so my mom looked for other recipes for the risoles for us to enjoy. Until when I was 8 years old, we went to a market and saw a seller selling risoles with eggs, smoked beef and cheese inside. From that time, my mom tried to find a recipe for American Risoles.
I think the name “American Risoles” is because the ingredients included Smoked beef, cheese, and mayonnaise in it. When I was a child, not many older people (from my parents’ generation above) liked to eat that kind of food. That’s why the original Risoles are from veggies. I think this food is important to me because we usually don't eat it because we enjoy it, but also to give to other people. Many Indonesian buy or make their own risoles and give it to other people when you are on your birthday, or when it is your last birthday of work. Risoles, for me, has a lot of meaning to share food to other people. In Indonesia, many people share food with their family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and guests. Even in Hawaii, if I have time, I usually make Risoles for my friends here, so they can try it. Whenever I make and eat Risoles, it makes me happy because it brings everybody together, and it reminds me of back home.

These sound and look delicious, thanks for sharing! I love the story you shared about how when you were young you'd pick out the vegetables from the Risoles. My brothers and I would do that with everything when we were kids too. The idea of these being made for other people for special events reminds me of how there is always one person that makes musubis for potlucks here. It's beautiful to see food bringing people together, especially from other cultures!
